The same job title can cover very different work. One CNC operator loads blanks and checks finished parts against an inspection sheet. Another selects tools, sets up the machine and writes programs for short production runs. When applying abroad, those responsibilities matter: a salary figure needs the context of the work and the employment terms.
Several useful benchmarks are available for comparing European CNC pay in 2026. The figures below cover Germany, Poland, Czechia, France and the United Kingdom. All amounts are before tax and mandatory deductions. Previous-year statistics and current career guides can help assess an offer, alongside the terms of the actual employment contract.
Five countries, several kinds of salary figures
These sources do not provide a single comparable CNC operator rate across Europe. Some report median earnings, while others give starting pay or a range based on experience. The Polish examples are offers from two employers. Keeping the figures in their original currencies makes them easier to compare with local vacancies at the relevant skill level.
- Germany: €4,195 gross per month is the median for a skilled metal-cutting occupational group that includes Zerspanungsmechaniker, or qualified machining specialists. The middle half of earnings falls between €3,509 and €4,952. Source: Entgeltatlas 2025.
- Poland: PLN 6,000–9,000 gross per month in an SPX Flow Technology Poland advertisement in Bydgoszcz; PLN 8,000–10,000 in the headline of a RAWOTECH vacancy in Grodzisk Mazowiecki. These are two offers reviewed in September 2026, rather than a national average.
- Czechia: CZK 46,694 gross per month is the 2025 median for CNC machine setters and operators in private-sector occupational group CZ-ISCO 72237.
- France: starting from €1,917 gross per month, according to the Onisep career profile for CNC machine operators. This is an entry-level benchmark.
- United Kingdom: £25,000–42,000 per year is the range from starter to experienced worker in the National Careers Service CNC machinist profile.
A median splits the observations into two equal halves: half of earnings fall below it and half above. It does not indicate what a new entrant will be offered. The boundaries of the middle half are also different from the lowest and highest salaries available in the market.
Germany and Czechia: pay statistics tied to occupational groups
Germany's Entgeltatlas from the Bundesagentur für Arbeit provides a full-time earnings benchmark for a skilled metalworking group. It covers several occupations, including turners and machine setters. Applying its €4,195 median to a job consisting solely of loading an already configured machine would overlook that difference in skill and responsibility.
There are regional differences within the group as well. Entgeltatlas 2025 reports medians of €4,567 in Baden-Württemberg and €4,364 in Bavaria. When assessing an offer against the national figure, consider the workplace location and the level of the job. Ask the employer separately about the terms for any additional payments.
Czechia's National System of Occupations, NSP identifies CNC machine setters and operators as group CZ-ISCO 72237. Its private-sector median for 2025 is CZK 46,694 gross per month. This group combines operating and setting work, so an applicant still needs to establish which tasks the vacancy involves.
Poland: the duties behind the advertised range
An SPX Flow Technology Poland vacancy offers PLN 6,000–9,000 gross per month under an employment contract. The CNC turning role includes selecting tools, setting work offsets, entering corrections and inspecting parts with measuring instruments. The advertisement specifies two shifts, with a possible third when order volumes increase.
RAWOTECH lists PLN 8,000–10,000 gross in its vacancy headline for a milling machinist who programs at the machine using HURCO WinMax, sets up tools and determines the machining process. The work involves short runs and prototypes on a single shift. The body of the same advertisement gives a separate net range, so the final base pay and calculation need confirmation from the employer.
These examples show why searching only for operator produces varied results. Programming at the control, setting up independently and running an existing program call for different experience. Two advertisements provide examples of actual offers, but cannot establish average pay for all CNC operators in Poland.
France and the UK: starting pay and experienced roles
France's Onisep lists starting pay from €1,917 gross per month. Comparing that directly with Germany's median would mix an entry-level figure with earnings covering different experience levels. An experienced setter needs vacancies with comparable duties and disclosed pay.
The UK's National Careers Service gives an annual range of £25,000–42,000 and typical weekly hours of 40–44. Its CNC machinist profile includes programming, choosing cutting parameters, adjusting the machining process and inspecting parts. The upper end of that reference range is not a promised salary for a role limited to loading machines.
Dividing the UK annual figures by 12 produces roughly £2,083–3,500 per month. This is an arithmetic conversion for comparison, without assuming a particular payment schedule. Converting pounds, zlotys or koruna into euros requires an exchange rate and a date; original currencies are more convenient for assessing local job offers.
Base pay, shifts and annual earnings
Separate guaranteed pay from earnings that depend on additional conditions. Night shifts, overtime and production bonuses can change the final amount. If a high figure assumes regular overtime, compare it with an offer based on the same working hours.
For example, a hypothetical rate of €20 an hour for 40 paid hours a week gives average monthly gross earnings of about €3,467: 20 × 40 × 52 ÷ 12. This is a worked example, rather than a salary statistic for any country. It excludes premiums, unpaid breaks and contract-specific arrangements.
To compare two offers, ask for the base rate, guaranteed hours, payment rules for additional shifts and the total mandatory annual payments. Keep conditional bonuses separate. If an employer or agency provides accommodation, establish any deductions, how many people share it and the cost of travelling to the workplace.
What to discuss before relocating or accepting an offer
Take-home pay depends on the country and the worker's individual circumstances. Calculating it requires the contract type, tax status and applicable deductions. Housing, transport and normal living expenses in the chosen town then need to be deducted from expected net pay. Gross salary alone cannot settle that comparison.
Support a request for higher pay with examples of work you can perform. For a setter, these might include independently producing the first part, selecting tools, applying dimensional offsets and checking dimensions against the drawing. For a programmer, describe the parts, equipment, CNC control and scope of responsibility for the program. Mentioning a control brand is more useful when it comes with the operations you can carry out independently.
Before accepting, agree who handles setup, programming and first-part approval, what shift pattern applies and how the rate will change after probation. Country-level salary comparisons can then help narrow the search: published figures provide a benchmark, while the decision rests on the duties, guaranteed earnings and costs associated with the particular job.
